Over 180 guests gathered at the Ritz-Carlton in Laguna Niguel for the 2nd Annual Southern California Cure SMA Gala of Hope. This incredible evening raised nearly $100,000 in support of Cure SMA, the leading foundation for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The passion and generosity of our community has helped fuel research and progress and we are now closer than ever before to finding a treatment and cure for SMA.
Who Song and Larry’s Cal Mex Cantina is now putting a unique twist on Sunday brunch. This all-you-can-eat experience offers “hangover” cures with a bloody mary bar, bottomless mimosas, and a wide variety of your favorite Mexican entrees.
First, you're greeted at the door by their charming staff, and immediately introduced to the Bloody Mary Bar. You get to choose the alcohol (pepper, bacon, or herb-infused vodka, or pepper-infused tequila for a "Bloody Maria"), add a great classic Mary mix, then top it off with some celery, cucumber, bacon, a variety of spices, or even top it with a slider! When they sit you down, they often bring over a menu staple, their "hangover fries" - fries toped with cheese, a fried egg, and other such yumminess. Then the real grazing starts.
Two classic Mexican sopas, pozole and menudo, are prepared fresh, and surrounded by the typical condiments to top them. Add a pinch of onion, cilantro, radishes, cabbage, a squeeze of lime, and dig in. The salad bar is more like a produce stand - grab a bowl and the fresh ingredients you want and hand them over to the chef to toss or chop them for you.
You know that fruit cart guy in the park, with the ripest cut fruit and Tajin to sprinkle on it? He's here! Pick from your favorites, and the chef will put them in a bag and shake in the Tajin. Chicharrones are, of course, also bagged & ready for you.
You would expect home made tacos, of course, but these have a few twists. The freshly made tortillas come from two different flavored masas; one is a slightly spicy green habernero masa, and the other is a red slightly sweet chipotle-base. Both add a subtle flavor of their own to the tacos. Chicken, carnitas, and an addicting bacon carne asada, along with some tasty fresh slaws and grilled pineapple. Also, don't miss the fresh roasted corn on the cob, dipped in butter, brushed with mayo, and sprinkled with Tajin.
At the burrito bar, the chef will make your burrito to order. Choose from the usual breakfast fillings, and make sure to also include the green sauce, french fries, and a sunny-side-up egg!
There's a waffle bar, with the usual, plus a chocolate one. Even better is the omelette bar, where they make the omelettes to order in a waffle iron for a fluffy treat that'll hold the salsa.
Sliced tri tip that's perfectly seasoned & cooked rare, then sliced and sizzled on a salt flat is joined by a bacon-wrapped, pepper stuffed pork loin, with a touch of maple syrup, at the carving table.
The seafood bar features fresh ceviche, chilled plump shrimp, and oysters. Top them with some zippy cocktail sauce, or even zippier fresh horse radish, and your mouth will be very happy.
The hot table includes more of what you'd expect to accompany all this - rice, black beans, stack fajitas, chicken mac & cheese, cheesy potatoes, and more.
As if that's not enough, save room for a small dessert! There are tiny samplers of flan, chocolate cannoli, cinnamon apple tacos, lemon tarts, rice crispy fruit "sushi", and of course a chocolate fountain with treats to drench in it.
Executive chef, Eduardo Gonzalez, is excited to have his unique twist on things presented here, and he circulates among the guests to get feedback as well. Definitely a family-friendly bring, too - no hangover required.
